Castle Web Main Page

= Why? =

Some people ask me why do I write such drivel on my wiki pages. Well, it's called memories, to me personal life is all about remembering the good times, and having a wiki of good times allows me to jog my memory and remember those good times.

Yes I have thousands of photos, and these are great for the real visual, but as one wise person wrote, a picture can paint a thousand words, but only certain words, remembering the feelings and items along the way is so much easier if you can read a timeline, the mind then fills in the blanks.

A photo of a beach, might remind you of being there, but the words , we walked along the beach in 28 degree heat, reminds you of those feelings of the sun on the back of your neck, perhaps you'll then remember the dusty environment of the beach and so on.....

So if you have access to a wiki, start writing now just jot down notes, then when you are feeling down, or someone asks you about a city or a trip, a quick read and the whole thing comes flooding back.
==================
First let's talk Euro Star
What a great service this is on paper. Less formalities, no luggage in the hold and delivering you directly to the centre of Paris for a lighter carbon footprint than flying.

However, the first step was getting to the center of London. Eurostar departs from Kings Cross St Pancras, for those that aren't au fait with the London transport network, this is a great central location.

However, for people that live outside of London to get there for an early train was going to be touch and go. Our Train was 09:45 which meant to guarantee getting through security was going to mean getting there by 08:00, which if we'd left that morning would have been a 6am start, so no real saving compared to the airport which is a lot closer to Windsor.

Thankfully we were able to secure a room at the Holiday Inn Regents Park, and you can catch the review of that on another video.

The security queue in Eurostar was immense, and be prepared to be standing for 90 minutes. Once through due to the train before being cancelled it was standing room only, even in the business lounge. The business lounge was packed and limited in menu of what was on offer.

After eventually grabbing a seat we grabbed a couple of drinks and then headed down to the platform and they release you on to the platform in a huge wave of people.

Then you queue again, I love a good queue don't you, to get on to the carriage.
Finally we were on our way, advantage Eurostar, as the scenery is great as you whizz through the countryside.
Williamgray ywa14u61https://thecastle.me.uk/index.php?title=Paris_-_3_Nights_November_2022&diff=6596Paris - 3 Nights November 20222023-03-27T07:53:59Z
Williamgray ywa14u61: Created page with "Hi again everyone, thanks for visiting NoGluTraveller for another great destination.
= Why?

Reasons not to use CSV Export - Import and to get an appropriate API style connection

#Security of data
*Exporting data means it will be left on a server unsecured for a period of time this means during a network breach that data is there to be stolen. Equally in CSV format it is readable by anyone that has access
#Identifying Failures
*When pulling data from an API it is clear in the UI that a failure has occurred and can be reported. *Picking up a file from a share means the same file could be imported for weeks before anyone notices
#Troubleshooting
*When a failure occurs there are 3 systems involved, each having system resources and permissions to be investigated to confirm where and what is causing the failure.
#Frequency
*Pulling by API means the time / data / frequency of collecting the data is determined by the calling system not by the exporting system (ie. once a day / week / month)
#Cost
*Exporting to storage means paying for that data transfer and storage, importing is another cost for transferring the data.
*Via API it is one pull / no storage
#Data accuracy
*Exporting the data at 01:00 and importing it at 11:00 means it is 10 hours old
API connection at 11:00 means it is 0 minutes old.
#Management
*Managing an export process and a separate import process is managing 2 processes
*Managing an API pull is 1 process
#Data compatibility
*Exports to CSV can be limited in format and can be corrupted, which may not necessarily be identified promptly in the import process, which means another whole day before another export is available. API import breaking half way through is more likely to be flagged, and can be monitored more accurately and immediately, and retried without asking other personnel to carry out a manual export.

While it may take time to get an API connection built, in the long run it can help streamline the data import process.

This is just a rough outline, and there are likely many exceptions, but I needed this recorded.
Williamgray ywa14u61https://thecastle.me.uk/index.php?title=Edinburgh%2B_-_3_Days_January_2019&diff=6593Edinburgh+ - 3 Days January 20192023-01-23T07:30:07Z
Williamgray ywa14u61: /* Sights & Activities */

= Why?

= Why?

= Why?

A.6. Generating a Self-Signed SSL Certificate

This appendix describes how to generate a self-signed OpenSSL certificate for use with Jabberd.

I Important: Key Is Self-Signed
The key generated by the instructions below is self-signed. Such a key is not part of a trust hierarchy. When used to secure communications with Jabber clients, a self-signed key will usually cause warnings to appear because its authenticity cannot be verified against a trusted key.

A.6.1. Generate Key Pair

From a working directory, enter the command below to begin an interactive key generation process:

openssl req -new -x509 -newkey rsa:1024 -days 3650 -keyout privkey.pem -out server.pem

You will be prompted for a passphrase for the private key. After entering and confirming your passphrase, you will be prompted for public information about your key.

N Note: Common Name
Note that you should enter your domain name as the Common Name for your certificate.
N Note: Key Lifetime
Note that the command above creates a key with a 3650 day (10 year lifetime). To change the key lifetime, use a different number of days for the -days parameter.

A.6.2. Remove Passphrase

Enter this command to remove the passphrase from your private key:

openssl rsa -in privkey.pem -out privkey.pem

A.6.3. Combine the Private and Public Key

Enter this command to combine the private and public keys into a single file:

cat privkey.pem >> server.pem

A.6.4. Delete Private Key

You should now delete your private key:

rm privkey.pem

A.6.5. Move Key and Set Permissions

You can now move your key to its permanent location. For example, to move the key to the default Jabberd pemfile location, you would enter this command (as superuser):

mv server.pem /usr/local/etc/jabberd/server.pem

Then, you should set permissions on this file so that it is owned by superuser and is readonly (as superuser):

chown root:jabber /usr/local/etc/jabberd/server.pem
chmod 640 /usr/local/etc/jabberd/server.pem

Your certificate is now ready for use by Jabberd. You should make a backup (such as to a floppy) of your certificate.
Williamgray ywa14u61https://thecastle.me.uk/index.php?title=Downloading_Streams&diff=6544Downloading Streams2021-08-18T23:10:27Z
Williamgray ywa14u61: Created page with "mplayer -dumpstream "url" -dumpfile "filename""

mplayer -dumpstream "url" -dumpfile "filename"
Williamgray ywa14u61https://thecastle.me.uk/index.php?title=Philips_TV&diff=6543Philips TV2021-08-18T23:10:19Z
Williamgray ywa14u61:

this line converts a file using ffmpeg to play on a philips tv via pmm or mediatomb (which is ace!)

ffmpeg -i "Input_filename.mpg or avi etc" -acodec mp2 -ab 192000 -ac 2 -g 3000/10001 -s 720x576 -bf 2 -b 4900000 -vcodec mpeg1video "output_filename.mpeg"

Now if you want to use mencoder use this :-

mencoder -demuxer lavf -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=xvcd -vf scale=352:288,harddup -srate 44100 -af lavcresample=44100 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video:keyint=15:vrc_buf_size=327:vrc_minrate=1152:vbitrate=1152:vrc_maxrate=1152:acodec=mp2:abitrate=224 -ofps 25 -o MyOutputMovieName.mpg INPUTFILENAMEORWILD.MP4

Note INPUTFILENAMEORWILD.MP4 can be a single file name or multiple eg. VCLP*.MP4 and it will take all matching filenames in that directory

The Mencoder outputed files can be input into Cinelerra :)
Williamgray ywa14u61https://thecastle.me.uk/index.php?title=Nokia_800&diff=6542Nokia 8002021-08-18T23:10:09Z
Williamgray ywa14u61: Created page with "/home/william/handbrake -2 -t 1 -w 400 -l 240 -b 512 -r 25 -B 128 -R 44100 -i path_to_VTS_files -o output_filename.mp4 Script for easy conversion of DVD to mpgs for N800 #F..."
